THE WORLD’S fastest electric sports car is about to hit public Australian roads for the first time - and it went for a test drive on Darwin’s Hidden Valley racetrack yesterday.

As part of the Global Green Challenge the Tesla will try to break a 450km record in economy potential of a car driven by electric power.

Adelaide resident and Tesla-owner Simon Hackett said he was excited about having the opportunity to “take a new electric technology into the real world”.

“Nifty cars like this are the future - at 30amps the recharge takes eight hours, it’s like a mobile phone that you charge over night and use again the next day.” The Tesla is equipped with a 450kg battery taking the car to 100km/h in 3.9 seconds with a top speed of 200km/h.

Co-driver Emilis Prelgauskas said he was looking forward to being a part of the Global Green Challenge which was a “step into the future”.
