The boss of Nissan’s Sunderland plant said he was confident it had done all it could to attract electric vehicle manufacturing to the region - but said it was still in a race with two other European countries to land the work.
Trevor Mann, Nissan’s senior vice president for manufacturing in Europe, was speaking at One North East’s annual review meeting in Durham’s Radisson Blu Hotel.

The much talked electric car from Nissan has been temporarily put off to 2011-2012. The initial launch is to be in the company’s homeland, Japan along with US, and Europe while China may also get the nod during the same period. Once the global launch is over, India may get along the car. The company is exploring all possibilities to launch the car in India at the earliest with the Indian government’s aid awaited.

Nissan arguably could have justified a price hike on its affordable 2010 Versa, as Americans warm up to small cars and embrace what many are calling an age of abstinence. But on Wednesday, Nissan said prices for the 2010 Versa sedan remain unchanged from the 2009 model year, while the 2010 Versa hatchback gets a slight price increase.
The 2010 Nissan Versa 1.6 base model with a five-speed manual transmission starts at $10,710, including a $720 destination charge. The top-of-the-line 2010 Nissan Versa 1.8 SL with a four-speed automatic transmission starts at $16,820, including shipping.
