Nissan’s Leaf to blossom in 2011

The much talked electric car from Nissan has been temporarily put off to 2011-2012. The initial launch is to be in the company’s homeland,  Japan along with US, and Europe while China may also get the nod during the same period. Once the global launch is over, India may get along the car. The company is exploring all possibilities to launch the car in India at the earliest with the Indian government’s aid awaited.

Toyota Plans Smaller Cars for Chinese Market

Toyota Motor Corp., which has been hurt in China by a failure to anticipate the demand for affordable, no-frills cars, said it plans to increase the proportion of smaller cars it sells in the country.

Beijing-based spokesman Niu Yu said Tuesday the Japanese car maker is taking the step to improve sales.

Japanese Car Output Falls

Toyota Motor Corp. and Nissan Motor Co. said Monday their domestic production in August declined from a year earlier but at a slower pace than in recent months, as home-market sales rose for the first time in 13 months.

Toyota, the world’s biggest automobile manufacturer by sales volume, said it built 24% fewer vehicles in Japan in August, which compares with a 30% decline in July.

Maruti Suzuki to relaunch power-packed SX4

Passenger car leader Maruti Suzuki India has stopped manufacturing its most expensive car SX4, the mid-sized sedan, reinforcing the widely-held belief that the small car leader does not have the expertise to make and market big cars.

Maruti Suzuki SX4Maruti will relaunch SX4 within a fortnight with a new 1.6-litre engine which will have a much higher pick-up. It will be more expensive than the current top-end Zxi variant, which comes at Rs 7.5 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

Maruti will also rope in Bollywood star John Abraham as the new brand ambassador for the sporty model to arrest falling sales.

Car sales rev up to festive season

The festive season this year has given the recession-struck city car dealers a new lease of life with more customers flowing in for purchases. According to various car dealers in the city the car sales have jumped by 40 per cent from what it was in the last three months.

What’s cheering dealers is the fact that not only are the customers buying cars, they are also not settling for base models or regular cars. “All kinds of cars from Swift to Wagon R to Ritz, all categories are selling this season. The customers do not seem to be bothered by the recession and the salary cuts when it comes to buying cars this festive season,” Tapan Ghosh, regional manager, Maruti told ‘TOI’, adding that in the past one month the company has grown by 4 per cent despite recession. This being just the beginning of the festive season, Ghosh said that the company would expect more sales on Vijaya Dasami day, and later just before Diwali.

Car sales cross 1-m mark on soft rates, new launches

A slew of new car launches, easing loan rates and an early pick-up in festive season demand helped the Indian auto industry continue its robust sales growth in August, crossing the 1 million mark for the first time in the current fiscal.

Commercial vehicle sales also reported an increase for the second consecutive month, growing 18.5% to 40,624 units in August from 34,289 units in the year-ago period. The major pull came from light trucks which has shown strong growth with demand picking up in rural markets, FMCG and infrastructure sectors. Commercial vehicle sales were negative for almost a year before bouncing back in July this year.

Ford to showcase small car this week

US auto major Ford is now training its sights on India to offset tough business conditions in other global markets. The lone American automobile company that survived the downturn without a government bailout, Ford Motor is planning to integrate car designs globally and develop compact and mid-sized cars as part of a strategy to improve profitability and productivity.

Officials close to the development said Ford is focusing on economies of scale and implementing ‘one Ford’ strategy across markets. Alan Mulally, president and CEO of Ford Motor, is also making a lightning visit to India to showcase its small car in the middle of this week. Mr Mulally, who took over the reigns of Ford in 2006, divested marque brands Jaguar, Land Rover and Aston Martin before the collapse of the global markets.

Yamaha launches superbike VMAX priced at Rs 20 lakh
